A new study from Baycrest and York University found that learning a second language improves cognitive function in older persons within a few months.

The study involved a group of seniors aged 65 to 75 who were asked to either study Spanish on a language learning app or utilise BrainHQ, a brain-training programme. Both were given the same amount of time (30 minutes a day, five days a week for 16 weeks). The groups were evaluated for executive function at the start of the meeting and at the end of 16 weeks, and their scores were compared to those of a control group that did not use either app.

Although only one of the apps was designated as a "brain trainer," both language learners and BrainHQ users improved their executive functioning and working memory, with the added advantage of learning and understanding a new language.

The participants had neither studied Spanish previously nor had they studied any other language in the earlier ten years, hence it was surprising to see the fact that these cognitive gains were achieved after only a few months of constant study.

The study concluded that its always important to enjoy learning and it’s never too late to start learning and keep your brain happy and healthy.
